Piece By Piece Quilt Guild

We had a great class yesterday at the Piece By Piece Quilt Guild in Morgan Hill (though we were actually in Gilroy for the workshop!)  Thanks to May and Carol for inviting me.  I think everyone had a good time.  As usual everyone brought a wonderful variety of fabrics.

I have to apologize in advance for the quality of these photos.  Last weekend I was in San Diego seeing that favorite singer of mine, Alfie Boe from the UK.  I couldn't miss the chance to see him here in California.  Well, I dropped my camera at the theater but it didn't appear to be broken so forgot about it.  I was fortunate to get my picture taken with Alfie after the concert and I did think that it looked a little weird.  Not him, but the picture in general.  Not the best but I was happy to have it and thought maybe it was the lighting or the curtain behind us.

Well, when I started taking pictures of the blocks in the workshop, there were horizontal lines across them all that I couldn't seem to get rid of.  Then I remembered dropping the camera at the theater and how strange the photo taken with Alfie looked.  When I left class I went and bought a new camera.  But, since these are the only photos I have from class, I'll have to use them so please forgive the quality.

First the Lotus blocks:

And the Orange Peel blocks:

And seeing Deb Rowden's "Hot Mama" quilt in the Gallery section of Tile Quilt Revival, one participant drafted a pattern in class to make her own version of Deb's quilt.

As usual, these blocks are all works in progress but soon to be stitched up and finished!

Thanks for a fun day and a great class!

Elvis Tile Quilt Block

Remember the Elvis block in process at the Petaluma Quilt Guild workshop?

Well, here is is all stitched up.

Elvis lives!

Melissa H. sent this along and she has another block all stitched up and ready to go.  She said she really enjoys the technique.  Thanks, Melissa!

More Workshops

On September 12, I was in Folsom at the Folsom Quilt and Fiber Guild.  What a great guild!  We had a small class and a couple people had to leave early so didn't get too many pictures, but what I got is really super.

All Starry Orange Peel blocks this time and again, a great variety.

Then last week I was at Diablo Valley Quilters, another great guild, and I was happily surprised by a tile quilt made from our book before I ever got there.  Lynn and her sister, made it for another sister, Tessie, who owns a tile shop thinking Tessie would hang it in her shop.  I understand that isn't the case. This is the Lotus quilt from the cover of Tile Quilt Revival in 10'' format and the blocks in a different order.  It is so happy with all the bright flowers and I love the letters in the lower border, forming the name of the quilt, "Tessie's Treasures".  I so seldom see completed tile quilts.  I was really excited and I think this quilt is exceptionally nice.

I hung the quilt on the design wall in the classroom next to my "Lotus" quilt which is in 15'' format partly visible on the left..

Here is a close up of the lower border.

And here is a close up of one of the blocks.

And here are the blocks from the workshop.  First the Lotus blocks.

William Morris fabrics

Australian fabrics

This Lotus block is 10'' and will be fused instead of hand appliqued.

And now two Starry Orange Peel blocks.

What fun!  Two more workshops to do this year.

More Workshops

Gads, I'm way behind!  I've been to two great guilds and have great pictures from the workshops that I need to show before heading out tomorrow to Folsom Quilt and Fiber Guild and no doubt collecting photos of more great work.

First of all on August 18, I was beside a lovely pond with ducks and geese outside and lots of tile inside!  The Petaluma Quilt Guild.  Their quilt show was the week before and from the stories they told, it was a great success.

First are the blocks from the Lotus pattern.  Note the first:  All about Elvis!  I love it!  Who knew that Elvis fabric could make a tile quilt!

Here are more Lotus blocks.  As usual, all very different. and all very beautiful.  Notice that some of the blocks show the applique in progress and the background and grout lines being revealed.

The next block was a redesign in class of the Lotus block made larger and rectangular, rather than square.  In the upper right corner is a fabric being "auditioned" for that spot.

And now for the Starry Orange Peel Blocks.  Several of these blocks were well along the way of having the grout revealed with the pieces appliqued in place.

Great work and a great bunch of quilters.  And, they sent me home with a dozen Petaluma eggs!

Then on August 21, I was at the Friendship Square Quilt Guild in La Habra down in Orange County.

Another great group who produced a great bunch of blocks.

First the Starry Orange Peel blocks

 One Orange Peel appliqued!

And the Lotus Blocks.

This last block is one of the other patterns from the Lotus quilt.

I never cease to be amazed at the variety of fabrics and how they all seem to work in a Tile Quilt -- including the Elvis fabric!  Keep inspiring me!

Hancy's Stars

I'm happy to finally post a picture of this quilt that I started last January.  I finally finished machine quilting it last month and finally got a picture taken.

This quilt is named for my 4X Great Grandmother, Hancy Pitcairn Reynolds Greene Warren.  Hancy was born in Massachusetts in 1809.  She married Seth Greene and lived in Bennington, Vermont and had a son, Charles.  Seth died when Charles was 10 years old and Hancy remarried to Charles Warren.  The Warrens eventually settled in Cedar Falls, Iowa.  Hancy died there in 1881.

A picture of Hancy, actually a "tintype", came to me with some family things.
I sent a copy of the photo to Barbara Brackman and asked if she could identify when it might have been taken from the clothing that Hancy is wearing.  She did, post Civil War, she said.  As I did, she also loved the name, Hancy (not Nancy) and asked if she could use the photo for her Civil War fabric lines.  She designed a pattern for her 1862 Battle Hymn fabric line for Moda.and used Hancy's picture.

Here's a link to Barbara's blog, Barbara Brackman's MATERIAL CULTURE, where she shows my quilt in the making.   I was working on it at a retreat we both attended.  This was posted February 20, 2012. And there is a link to the pattern, which I scaled down a bit.  http://barbarabrackman.blogspot.com/search?updated-max=2012-02-22T06:00:00-06:00&max-results=7&start=51&by-date=false

My quilt is about 48'' x 48''

North Cities Quilt Guild of Orange County

Last month I was pleased to do a program and a workshop on Tile Quilts at the North Cities guild in Placentia in southern California.  What a great group!  I was also happy that I had my advance copy of our new book to show them as well as some of the quilts from the book.
.

Books should be in your quilt shops soon!  More on the book next time. This is about North Cities and the wonderful blocks from their workshop.

This first block was designed and drawn in class.  It's a snake, all in Australian fabrics.

And here is another block designed as a variation on the All in a Dream quilt in our Tile Quilt Revival book.

And here are the Lotus blocks.

And the Starry Orange Peel blocks.

As usual, all very different and all fabulous!  I know they will all be wonderful when the "grout" is revealed and the stitching is complete.

Thanks for a great day!
