Now to stay home and work on the quilts I want to make and see if I can get bored.

I loved teaching people about Tile Quilts and how to make them our way as well as trying to encourage quilters to look at old quilts and be inspired to reinvent them in their own way.

I'm not sure how much I'll be posting here now but perhaps I will occasionally be inspired to do so.

Thanks! It's really been fun but it's time to say I'm done!Bobbi Finleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08707370059265955493noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4222385025787362853.post-67451492340514312202014-05-26T13:15:00.000-07:002014-05-27T17:42:15.471-07:00Gone to Paradise!Last Tuesday and Wednesday I had the pleasure of giving my lecture and teaching my tile quilt workshop for the Ridge Quilters in Paradise, a lovely town in the hills above Chico, with lots of pine trees. I arrived on Monday evening and shortly thereafter was treated to a lively thunderstorm which was exciting, since they don't happen often nearer the coast where I live in San Jose. And I was inside and safe! It did knock out the power briefly and rattle the windows in the restaurant where I was eating dinner!

At the meeting on Tuesday morning, the Ridge Quilters were visited by the local television station and some filming took place while I was speaking but I think the main subject was their philanthropy work so I suspect and hope that I was left on the proverbial cutting room floor! It's nice to know they got the publicity. They are a great bunch of quilters and deserve the attention.

Thanks for the great hospitality you extended to me.

The workshop was small with eight participants who all seemed happy to be learning about making tile quilts.

One participant had already purchased our book, Tile Quilt Revival, and had started making two blocks before she came to class from the patterns in the book. She started a new block in class. The first two pictures are the blocks she had already started and the third is her class project. All these blocks are from the Starry Orange Peel quilt. I love the hummingbird fabric in the shooting star block. Nice fabric choices and great applique. Look at the points on that star!
I hope she and the rest of the class send me pictures when they complete their projects.

Here are the rest of the works in progress from the class. First the Starry Orange Peel blocks in a nice variety of fabrics with the applique underway, revealing the background and creating the "grout" lines.

Nice work everyone! I hope even those who were reluctant to do needle-turn applique have happily all become great fans of the process. Thanks for a great day, including the great potluck! Bobbi Finleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08707370059265955493noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4222385025787362853.post-70464448126863533502014-04-22T15:01:00.002-07:002014-04-23T08:58:04.798-07:00Coastal Quilters of Santa BarbaraI had a wonderful time a week or so ago when I visited the Coastal Quilters of Santa Barbara and Goleta. As I told them, I spent a lot of time in Santa Barbara as a child visiting my cousin (appropriately named Barbara) and had suffered the worst sunburn of my life on the beach there one summer! My family is all gone from the area now but Santa Barbara still holds a soft spot in my heart. And, of course, it is a beautiful spot so what's not to like? The ocean, the palm trees, with those wonderful mountains standing guard over the city, and what's considered the queen of the California Missions.

My workshop was on Friday, April 11, following the lecture the night before. I hope the lecture might have inspired a few people to be interested in looking at antique quilts and reinterpreting them in contemporary ways, especially tile quilts.

We had 18 in the workshop, a very nice and talented group. To start with, one participant already had our book, Tile Quilt Revival, and had made the Starry Orange Peel quilt and did a fabulous job. Very nice fabric choices with a double inner border and great fabric choice for the outer border.

From this experience, she went on and designed her own tile quilt which she was working on in class but it wasn't far enough along to photograph. I've asked her to send along a photo later so I hope that she does.

Another participant had also designed her own tile quilt which featured lilies but it too was not far enough along to photograph. Again, I hope she sends along a photo when finished.

And a third participant fell in love with the Macintosh Rose quilt in the gallery section of the book that Georgann Eglinski made. Actually I think she already loved the Charles Rennie Macintosh Rose and was inspired to draw her own pattern from seeing Georgann's version. She had begun to applique her block in class, revealing the black background lines (or grout).

Also, Patty decided to use my pattern "Birds in a Cherry Tree" which is not in the book but which I sell in class and at my lectures. I have made it up in both William Morris fabrics and in batiks and wrote about it previously on this blog on March 10, 2011. Patty changed it to still other types of fabrics. She was still trying to decide what kind (color) of fruit tree her birds were sitting in as well as the leaves, so her grey background is showing in those areas. She hadn't started to applique yet.

I love it and I hope she sends me a picture when it is finished.

Of the two patterns I offer in class, Lotus was the hands down favorite with only two selecting the Starry Orange Peel block with very nice results. The applique was begun in both blocks, on the orange peel shapes.

And now for the Lotus blocks. As usual, a wonderful variety of fabrics were utilized. It never ceases to amaze me how any kind of fabric choices seem to work with these tile quilts.

I always ask my students to send me pictures of their completed work and occasionally that happens which I love. One student, Reyna Lorele, finished her block and has already posted it on her blog as well as sending me a picture. Check out her blog at www.yarninyarnout.blogspot.com to see what she has to say about making tile quilts. I'm pleased to say that I think she is hooked! Besides talking about how much fun the class is, she also made this comment, "Bobbi's teaching style is down-to-earth, clear, and helpful, btw.....". Thanks, Reyna! So glad that you enjoyed it, including the applique!

Here is her block in class.

And here is her completed block. She decided to leave off the corner pieces.

Nice job and she's already working on her next block.

Here are the rest of the Lotus blocks. So fun! The applique turning under the seam allowances to reveal the grout lines has begun in most of the blocks. Also some of the blocks include the outside corners while others have left them off so that the circles tend to float on the background.

First is another innovator. She used indigo fabrics for the outside pieces and will insert a circle later of her own design which includes sashiko stitching where the white space is in the center.

Fish, birds, flowers, indigo, coffee, abstract -- it all works!

I've included two of the students names and my apologies to those I haven't mentioned by name. I usually don't use any student names but if you want me to add your names to your blocks, just send me an email and I'll edit the blog to add your names.

Thanks for a great time in Goleta and for being such a fun class!

The first was spotted at the recent Mid-Atlantic Quilt Festival (MAQF) by two of my friends from Williamsburg, Virginia who recognized its source and were nice enough to send along photos. Thanks, Barbara and Nan!

Misty Cole of Maryland made this quilt and entered it in the Baltimore Applique Society's exhibit at MAQF. Misty used blocks from both Lotus and Starry Orange Peel and added her own block and border designs. It appears she included some of the original Lotus fabric by Amy Butler, the large daisies, and similar fabric motifs in the quilt. Nice, work, Misty!
Misty has a blog: www.dailydesignwall.blogspot.com

And a plug for the Baltimore Applique Society. I'm a member of this organization because I want to support the work they do in promoting applique but mostly their work to support museum quilt collections. Even though I've never attended a meeting, they have a terrific newsletter with detailed reports of their meetings including the speakers with lots of photos. Here's a link to their website. http://www.baltimoreapplique.com/

Another tile quilt was spotted at a recent quilt show in Palm Springs, California and the photo made it's way to Carol and to me. The maker's name is on the label but I can't make it out. My apologies! It is quite a nice example of the Lotus quilt.

I've just learned the maker's name, Karen Howes of the Cactus Sew-Ables in Yucca Valley, CA. Thanks Sharleen for passing along the information.

I love seeing how quilters have been inspired by our book!
Something to post!Or, perhaps I should say "Finally getting around to posting!"

First is a wonderful tile quilt from the recent Road to California quilt show. This quilt won first place in the Innovative, Wall, Applique category. "Blast from the Past" was made by Kim Bruny and it consists of all the blocks from my "Lotus" quilt on the cover of Tile Quilt Revival, with an added border. Kim made her version by using machine applique and covering it with over 3500 crystal embellishments. That is not something I would have done but I love it when people take my designs and run with them and make them their own.

On Valentine's Day I was in the west end of the San Fernando at the Valley Quiltmakers Guild
teaching my workshop on making a tile quilt block. We had fun and had some fun results. As usual, the blocks are in various states of progress, with some students having started turning under the seam allowances and others in the basting stage. Also as usual, was the nice variety of fabric choices.

And this week found me in Roseville, near Sacramento, at the Roseville Quilt Guild . First I want to thank Michelle Peerson for her fine hospitality and everyone for putting up with me as I was coming down with a cold. Hopefully I only passed on an infection for tile quilts and not a cold!

We had a variety of results in the workshop, as always, and a variety of techniques being used and prepared for besides needle-turn applique. First are the "Lotus" blocks.

I have to say that, being a cat person, I loved this block. Cats at the movies eating popcorn. She was going to call it Girls Night Out!

And this student modified the main circle by inserting a smaller circle so that she could use her fairy fabric to focus on just one fairy.

This student managed to design two blocks with more in mind.

And one more. Two students were working with the same group of fabrics and both planned to do machine applique.

Here's the other one in the Orange Peel pattern.

And here are the rest of the Orange Peel blocks.

Two Orange Peel shapes already appliqued in place on this one.

And the final block in which the student was rethinking her fabric choices but planned on using these. She also planned to do machine applique so her seam allowances were turned under and pinned in place.

cold!

On Saturday I went "over the hill" (Santa Cruz Mountains) to Aptos and found 21 students anxious to learn about Tile Quilts. This is the largest class I've taught and we had a great time. At the end of the day everyone said they had lots of fun and they really enjoyed the tile quilt method. I have to say that it was a gorgeous day close to the ocean and I'm almost surprised that they chose to be inside at a class and not outside somewhere but I suppose living there they are used to it. The results of the workshop are shown below.

But first, I gave my lecture at the meeting on Monday evening and I was happy to see several familiar faces there from the retreat we used to attend together at Point Bonita. Some of the workshop attendees brought their blocks to the meeting to show everyone. Fabulous!

And now the workshop blocks. As usual a great variety of fabrics making each block unique. The Starry Orange Peel block seemed to be the favorite of the day.

As you can see, the blocks are in various states of progress and many people got to the point of starting to make the grout lines by turning under and appliqueing the seam allowances.

Here are the Lotus blocks, including one (at the beginning) that is from the Lotus quilt but a different block from the usual pattern I hand out in class. This pattern is in our Tile Quilt Revival book.
Thanks to you all for such a great time!Bobbi Finleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08707370059265955493noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4222385025787362853.post-3781553317006374462013-10-25T19:14:00.000-07:002013-10-25T19:15:56.119-07:00Catching Up, Again!I have lots of fun blocks to show from two workshops.

First is the Glendale Quilt Guild. It was fun to be in Glendale. I was born in Glendale and it was the first quilt guild I joined when I started quilting way back in 1988. It was the first show I entered. Fun memories.

Here are the blocks from Glendale. I have to say that I had a bunch of rebels -- about half the class wanted to use their own methods of applique but 3 or 4 students did use the needle-turn method. Here are their blocks. The first two are Starry Orange Peel, the next is a different Lotus block from the book and the next two are the usual Lotus block. All nicely done.

The next two blocks were prepared with starch and ready to be appliqued by machine or hand, followed by another different Lotus block from the book.

This week I was in Arroyo Grande at the Central Coast Quilt Guild. I love the central coast area and it was great to spend some time there. On the morning of the workshop, it was very cool, foggy and overcast. We didn't see the sun until mid-afternoon. A good day to sit and stitch!

Two students chose the Lotus block but very different fabrics!

And the rest of the class chose Starry Orange Peel, again with very different fabric selections.

And one last Starry Orange Peel, my one rebel in this class! She isn't able to do hand applique so she prepared her block with the starch method and will finish with machine applique.

Thanks everyone for your great work and for the fun time!

Maureen Nass from the Mt. Tam Quilt Guild finished her version of Lotus.

Very nice! Thanks, Maureen for sending along the picture. I'm so glad you enjoyed the process of making a tile quilt. She said it was fun and she enjoyed using up some of her scraps.

Jane Toro from East Bay Heritage Quilters sent along a photo of her finished tile blocks using the Starry Orange Peel patterns which she put to use as a Huppah Canopy for her son's wedding. Notice the sun shining through. Now that the wedding is over, she will put the blocks together as a quilt. Thanks, Jane! I'm so pleased that you used the tile quilt style in such an innovative way.

And congratulations to the Bride and Groom and the parents standing under the Huppah!

While I was in Virginia, the timing was perfect for me to attend the opening of the exhibit of American Quilt Study Group's 2010 Study of 19th Century Star Quilts at the Virginia Quilt Museum. The Museum is located in Harrisonburg, in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley. The AQSG Studies are close to my heart as I was the coordinator for many years and the idea was born in my living room! In order to participate, a quilt in the chosen topic is studied by making an interpretation of the original. The interpretations are restricted to 200'' in overall size so the original quilt is either scaled down or only a portion is included. These 25 quilts, chosen from the entire results of the Study, have been on tour since 2010. I loved seeing my quilt again!

The quilt I chose to study was a Mennonite quilt. I loved the Lone Star center and the applique motifs were very unusual to me. I scaled mine down and did not include the outer border with beautiful feather quilting as it would have ended up too narrow to be effective.
The original quilt is in the collection of the Mennonite Heritage Center in Harleysville, PA. Unfortunately, the maker is unknown but it is known to have come from a Mennonite Family in Souderton, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.
Here is my interpretation on exhibit at the Virginia Quilt Museum
with my good friend, Barbara Gaffield, from Williamsburg.

The quilts from the exhibit are published in a book, Stars, A Study of 19th Century Star Quilts, published by Kansas City Star Books.

And last but not least. When I was at the American Quilt Study Group Annual Seminar in Charleston, SC, Virginia Vis shared a picture of a new tile quilt she saw at the Arlington (VA) County Fair 2012. The quilt maker called it "Ticker Tape". Not made in the style that Carol and I used for our book, but more in the method of the original quilts though not as random. It's fun to see.
I'm wondering now why I didn't go on the Shop Hop too!

Last Saturday, ten of us gathered at Bev's fabulous studio in the hills of Hollister. Several of us didn't want to leave at the end and threatened to hide in the shower but Bev warned us that there was no room in the shower, she had fabric stored there!

This was a really great group of quilters. Some had lots of experience with quilting in general and with applique while others were fairly recent beginners. That said, they all did a great job of working with the tile quilt method and produced some fabulous blocks.

Bev had taken my workshop previously at the King City guild in January and as a result of the class, she had finished four blocks. She had the finished blocks on her design wall and I was delighted to see them. Each block is Block A from my "Lotus" quilt which is on the cover of Tile Quilt Revival but Bev has oriented each block differently to add interest. Here's a photo.

Bev designed another block in class which will become a pillow in her living room.

And when I took a photo of this block and showed it to the maker, she decided that the yellow was too bright and chose another fabric. She had already started appliqueing the orange peel shape to the right. Taking a photo of the work, sometimes let's us see things that we didn't see before. Calhoun from Lynchburg, Virginia sent me a photo of the fabulous tile quilt she made from our book, Tile Quilt Revival. She named her quilt "Circles and Friends" and had this to say about it, "<span style="color: #1f497d; font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; font-size: 11.0pt;">It
was a joy to make and I’ll probably do more. It is an opportunity to
use lots of wonderful prints I have on hand. The fabrics in this quilt
are practically all decorator samples."

<span style="color: #1f497d; font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; font-size: 11.0pt;"><span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">She used a black background fabric which give the appearance of stained glass. Our method for making these quilts is much less labor intensive than the traditional stained glass method of adding bias strips. You create the lines by taking away something: turning under the seam allowances and revealing the black background fabric. The black sashing and border make a great finish.

<span style="color: #1f497d; font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; font-size: 11.0pt;"><span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">Thanks for sending me the photo, Frances. Great job! I love it!

<span style="color: #1f497d; font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; font-size: 11.0pt;"><span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">In the meantime,
<span style="color: #1f497d; font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; font-size: 11.0pt;"><span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">I've been filling my time with various projects.

<span style="color: #1f497d; font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; font-size: 11.0pt;"><span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">For quite a while I've been working on some blocks from a pattern called "Dancing Umbrellas" from Laundry Basket Quilts (Edyta Sitar). I've been using this as my carry around project that I take to my Saturday Sew Sisters quilting group of six friends. I chose to make just nine blocks from batiks rather than the 25 featured in the pattern and also added a border. I call my quilt "Dancing in the Rain". Right now it is on exhibit at Prairie Queens Quilt Shop in San Jose with a few other offerings from the Applique Goddesses group.

<span style="color: #1f497d; font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; font-size: 11.0pt;"><span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">And another project from Edyta Sitar, from her book, Scrappy Fireworks Quilts is this sewing box. I bought the book because I loved this project and I'm happy that I finally had some time to get it made. I used "happy" Kaffe Fassett fabrics for my little house.

<span style="color: #1f497d; font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; font-size: 11.0pt;"><span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;"> It''s about 10.5'' x 4.5'' and 8'' high. Not sure what I'll use it for but I do smile when I look at it!

<span style="color: #1f497d; font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; font-size: 11.0pt;"><span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;"> And the last but not least too much time on my hand project was recovering my desk chair. Thomas, my dear sweet cat (unless he's biting me!) clawed the seat of my chair near to the shredding point -- usually when I was sitting in the chair in order to get my attention. I saw a picture in a book the name of which escapes me and I don't own, of how to recover your desk chair. Off to Beverly's I go (where I found the flat folds on sale for half price) to get some fabric. The chair was originally green and I could have gotten a good enough green plaid and not have to deal with covering the back rest. But I was really tempted by a big brown paisley. Anyone can have a green plaid chair, I thought, but not everyone can have a brown paisley desk chair! Covering the seat was easy since it only required a staple gun which I had in my toolbox. The back did require a little sewing, both by machine and by hand. And, I have enough paisley fabric left to recover the seat if dear Thomas shreds it again. This project makes me smile too.

Clear Lake is the largest lake in California and I, a native Californian, had never been there. It is a beautiful area with farms, orchards, vineyards and the lake, of course. Speaking of vineyards, I drove to Lakeport on State Highway 29 which took me through the beautiful Napa Valley. And there seems to be vineyards everywhere now. I'm beginning to think that the whole state of California is just one big vineyard! And that's just fine with me. I like my occasional glass of Chardonnay!

Another first was to discover that the first Quilt Trail in California is in Lake County. I spotted big quilt blocks on barns and commercial buildings while driving around. This is a movement that started in Wisconsin, I believe. I had no idea that there was a Quilt Trail in California. While visiting the local quilt shop, Kerrie's Quilting, I picked up a brochure. Check it out on their website: www.lakecountyquilttrail.com

At the lecture on Saturday morning, everyone learned about tile quilts and at the workshop on Sunday, eight Ladies of the Lake learned to make their own block. Here are the nice results of that class. As usual, there is a wonderful variety of fabrics. On a few of the blocks you can see the beginning of turning under the seam allowance to reveal the background and create the "grout" lines.

It was lots of fun. Thanks, Ladies of the Lake! Great work!
Barbara and I became friends there because we were both quilters and also both attended the historic Bruton Parish Church. It turned out that we had both lived in the Bay Area of California for many years, knew some of the same people, but had never met here. Barbara and her husband return to the Bay Area occasionally and I was happy to enjoy their company over a great lunch at Tacolicious in San Francisco.

During this visit Barbara showed me her fabulous tile quilt. She had our book, Tile Quilt Revival, and used several of the patterns that are included to make this quilt as a gift for a friend. Great job, Barbara! You make me proud. I hope your friend loves it. (Apologies for the poor picture quality.)
I gave a lecture and taught a workshop on tile quilts for the Pine Tree Quilt Guild which is aptly named as the area is abundant with pine trees.

I learned that Lynda, the program chair has just won Best of Show at this year's California State Fair! Congratulations, Lynda! Besides a cash prize, she is awarded a California Bear as pictured on the state flag -- not a real bear but a small statue of sorts. I didn't get to see the bear or the quilt so I can't show pictures but I do plan to get to the State Fair next month to check it out.

There were some lovely blocks made in the workshop, and as usual, a nice variety. The participants really enjoyed the class and really appreciated that it was a design class and not just an applique class. Here are a few photos starting with Lynda's, who designed two blocks while in class, one of each of the patterns I offer.

I always tell my students to send me pictures but that doesn't happen very often. And I understand that there are many reasons why that is so. Therefore, I was really pleased this week when I received the photo of this quilt from Margaret Christensen.

Margaret took the workshop on a very hot day last June at Mt. Tam Quilt Guild in San Rafael. Here's what Margaret said about her quilt.

" My plan was to make four blocks, but it became too much fun to stop! This is by far the brightest, loudest wall hanging I've ever done. Tonight I plan to share it at our Guild show-n-tell. Didn't even take a year. = ; ^ ). Thanks for a great class. Want to revisit your book for the other projects."

That last part makes me happy. I'm so glad that Margaret loved making a tile quilt. And when I look at her quilt, I can see that she used some of the patterns from the book, but she also redesigned some of the blocks and designed her own! Just what I want students to do -- make these quilts your own!

Margaret wanted me to be sure to say that Valerie Graf of Black Point Quilts, Novato, machine quilted her quilt.

Great work, Margaret! Thanks for sending the picture. I hope it will inspire others.
The next event just a few days after my trip to beautiful Redondo Beach was the Santa Clara Valley Quilt Association quilt show on April 20-21. I was so proud and pleased to have been chosen one of the Featured Artists this year. It was so fun to talk to everyone about our books and about needle turn applique! Here are some pictures of my booth at the show. All the quilts are from our books, except for the two bird quilts at the end but I do have a pattern for the quilt which is called, Birds in a Cherry Tree. The Happy Houses quilt was a favorite along with the two Tile Quilts on the right.

One exhibit at the show was quilts produced in workshop and I had the pleasure of seeing two results from my workshop on tile quilts.

This "chicken" quilt is one Lotus pattern block with a border and more applique. Nice job, Joy!

And this one is a compilation of blocks from several quilts in Tile Quilt Revival. Not the best photo but a great quilt, Mary!

And, last but not least, I was back in SoCal a week ago at the Santa Monica Quilt Guild, back by the blue Pacific and had some great Mexican food also! Here's a link to their website showing the class in progress. http://www.santamonicaquiltguild.org/page69/page69.html

And here are some of the blocks a little further along. Mostly Starry Orange Peel blocks this time and all wonderful! I never cease to be amazed at the variety of fabrics that all seem to work!

Here is a tile quilt found on Pinterest. We know nothing about it except that it appears to be made in the USA in 1893, apparently by someone whose initials were CWB.

It's a very nice example. I see hands, hearts, eyeglasses, scissors, stars, that very showy American flag, a house or maybe it is a schoolhouse or church, a horseshoe, a pitcher, more initials, "RAY" and "RW". Are those initials in the second block down, second from left? "DUO" or just shapes? The more you look the more you find.

Oh, I wish we knew more about it.Bobbi Finleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08707370059265955493noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4222385025787362853.post-52956760233821087092013-04-02T15:01:00.001-07:002013-04-04T15:38:59.480-07:00Shower of Stars

The Santa Clara Valley Quilt Association, of which I am a member, is having their biennial Quilt Show on April 20 and 21 at the Santa Clara Convention Center. Here is a link to find out all the information, http://scvqaquiltshow.org/

I am pleased and proud that I have been selected to be one of the Featured Artists for this year's show. I'll have lots of quilts from both of our books, Tile Quilt Revival and Fresh Perspectives to show in my booth and I will be demonstrating the Tile Quilt technique and the way I do needle-turn applique. I'll have books for purchase and my pattern for Birds in a Cherry Tree.

Birds in a Cherry Tree

24.5'' x 24.5''

And my latest quilt, Simple Graces, will be in the show. I adapted a pattern in Kim Diehl's book, Simple Graces, and used a collection of Barbara Brackman's William Morris prints from Moda. A little Broderie Perse in the center block. Hand applique, hand quilted. 67'' x 67'' I was calling it William Morris Churn Dash, but Barbara named it Simple Graces, so the name stuck!
A city in the citrus belt located near the San Bernardino mountains which were capped with snow while I was there. I loved looking at the snowy mountains with the ubiquitous Southern California palm trees in the foreground! I meant to take a picture but???

As usual, we had fun in the workshop with a variety of blocks produced.
Great work everyone!

The designer of the first Lotus block with the butterflies was so inspired she went home and designed and stitched a whole quilt top and brought it back to the guild meeting the next day to show me!

She did tell me in class that she didn't do needle turn applique and one reason she managed to accomplish this in one night is because she did fuze and machine applique the blocks. That said, it is wonderful and I was so pleased and proud that she was so inspired with the tile quilt process. And that she used the blocks in the book but also made them her own by the variations she made.

And here are some of the participants showing their blocks at the meeting.
Diego in 2010, the raspberry print left from the a quilt of years ago and the maroon solid. When I ran out of the weave, I
added the leafy print. Soon I ran out of
the twiggy print and substituted the pink botanical which I'd actually bought
along with the twiggy print at Rosie's.
Then I ran out of the leafy print and really had to go looking in my stash. I found the subdued paisley and decided it
would work fine in the center blocks. I
barely made it with the raspberry print, having to sew leftover strips together
to make it. And, in the end, ran out of
the maroon and had just enough of the raspberry print to substitute.

I had to buy a new camera and then figure out how to work it! Sixteen members of East Bay Heritage Quilters gathered to learn about tile quits and produced some lovely blocks.

First a very nice variety of Orange Peel blocks.

Thanks to May and Carol for inviting me. I think everyone had a good time. As usual everyone brought a wonderful variety of fabrics.

I have to apologize in advance for the quality of these photos. Last weekend I was in San Diego seeing that favorite singer of mine, Alfie Boe from the UK. I couldn't miss the chance to see him here in California. Well, I dropped my camera at the theater but it didn't appear to be broken so forgot about it. I was fortunate to get my picture taken with Alfie after the concert and I did think that it looked a little weird. Not him, but the picture in general. Not the best but I was happy to have it and thought maybe it was the lighting or the curtain behind us.

Well, when I started taking pictures of the blocks in the workshop, there were horizontal lines across them all that I couldn't seem to get rid of. Then I remembered dropping the camera at the theater and how strange the photo taken with Alfie looked. When I left class I went and bought a new camera. But, since these are the only photos I have from class, I'll have to use them so please forgive the quality.

What a great guild! We had a small class and a couple people had to leave early so didn't get too many pictures, but what I got is really super.

All Starry Orange Peel blocks this time and again, a great variety.

Then last week I was at Diablo Valley Quilters, another great guild, and I was happily surprised by a tile quilt made from our book before I ever got there. Lynn and her sister, made it for another sister, Tessie, who owns a tile shop thinking Tessie would hang it in her shop. I understand that isn't the case. This is the Lotus quilt from the cover of Tile Quilt Revival in 10'' format and the blocks in a different order. It is so happy with all the bright flowers and I love the letters in the lower border, forming the name of the quilt, "Tessie's Treasures". I so seldom see completed tile quilts. I was really excited and I think this quilt is exceptionally nice.

I hung the quilt on the design wall in the classroom next to my "Lotus" quilt which is in 15'' format partly visible on the left..

Here is a close up of the lower border.
